Materials

8 styrofoam balls, 6-inch diameter

Green spray paint, suitable for styrofoam

1 thick wooden dowel, 4 feet long

2 black pipe cleaners

Hot glue gun with glue sticks

Garden stakes (optional, for extra support)

Directions

1. Lay out all 8 styrofoam balls on a protective surface in a well-ventilated area.

2. Evenly spray-paint each styrofoam ball with the green spray paint. Allow them to dry completely.

3. Once dry, carefully insert the wooden dowel through the center of each ball, stacking them one on top of the other to form the caterpillar’s body.

4. Adjust the balls so they are evenly spaced along the dowel.

5. Use the hot glue gun to secure each ball in place to prevent them from sliding.

6. Bend the black pipe cleaners into antennae shapes, and glue them to the topmost ball to represent the caterpillar’s head.

7. Position your caterpillar in the garden bed by driving the dowel into the ground. Use garden stakes if additional support is needed.

Variations & Tips

For a more dynamic look, consider using different shades of green or even adding stripes with additional colors to mimic the natural patterns found on caterpillars. You can also vary the size of the styrofoam balls to create a caterpillar with a more undulating body shape. Adding googly eyes to the top ball can give the caterpillar a more animated and friendly look. These variations maintain the core idea of the project while allowing for personal creativity.
